Previously, you could only do this by tapping on the Settings icon (the three dots in the top right corner of the screen). Now, you can tap on the video to bring up a menu that lets you change the playback speed. For example, this is a helpful feature if you want to watch a video at 1.5x or 2x speed.
In addition, there’s a new “dark mode” in the YouTube app for Android and iOS. This makes the background dark instead of white, which can be easier on the eyes when watching videos in low light conditions. To enable dark mode, tap on your profile picture in the corner.
Another change is that users can now tap on the screen to bring up options such as turning on subtitles or changing the playback quality. YouTube has also made it easier to share videos by adding buttons for sharing via WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, and email.
Finally, YouTube has made some changes to the way ads are displayed on mobile devices. Previously, ads would interrupt your video playback and force you to watch them before you could continue watching your video. Now, ads will only be shown before or after your video. You can also choose to skip them if you don’t want to watch them.
Additional minor features include the ability to save videos offline on SD cards for Android devices and support for 360-degree videos. These features are only available on the YouTube app for Android and iOS, but they will eventually make their way to the YouTube website and other apps.
